How it Works

Chili Technology uses water to generate a wide range of in-bed temperature control in our cooling mattress pad. Similar to the semi-conductor technology that cools your computer, water passes by the chip and depending on the direction of electron flow, the water is cooled or heated. The water flows through soft coils in the mattress pad, actively adjusting the temperature of the surface of the bed. There is nothing but water flowing through the mattress pad; all temperature change happens in the control unit placed conveniently beside the bed.

Using advances in semiconductor technology the water temperature can change from 55°F to 110°F at full programmed range, at a fraction of the cost of air-conditioning. The result is the effect of a cool or warm bed throughout a night’s sleep. The motor is virtually silent (under 42 dBa). It is controlled in one degree increments with a hand-held remote. The benefits of a cooler night’s sleep are medically proven to increase REM sleep during the night.

How the ChiliPad Saves You Money

Why cool your whole house when you can cool just your bed? According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, air conditioning accounts for 45% of the annual average home energy budget in America. The most effective way to reduce your A/C bill is to raise your thermostat, typically in the evening or at night. This makes it very difficult – if not impossible – for anyone to get a good night’s sleep and save energy.

Because Chili Technology lets you change the microclimate of your bed, it can be used 12 months out of the year. So whether you are turning your thermostat down in the winter or up in the summer, you don’t have to sacrifice comfortable sleep for your budget.

The Chili Technology control units use 150 watts at peak and average 80 watts under normal use, which is only a fraction of the power used by a household air conditioner or heating system. Chili Technology provides the cool relief you need in order to comfortably raise your thermostat as much as 8 degrees over a short period of time. For every degree the thermostat is raised, 7% can be saved on cooling costs. This table shows savings based on raising your thermostat by 7 degrees, with a savings factor of 6% per degree. Why ChiliPad Is Better Than Electric Blankets

Numerous studies point out the possible health hazards from low-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Originally, the fields of greatest concern were those given off by overhead power line transformers. New evidence suggests that this really isn’t the case. It appears that the ELF (extremely low-frequency) magnetic fields given off by many household appliances and computer monitors can be of sufficient strength to be considered potentially hazardous. Although how ELF fields affect biological tissue is still not exactly known, it has been unequivocally shown that cells are affected. The best research to date shows that a cell’s membrane, or receptor molecules in the membrane, is sensitive to extremely weak low-frequency magnetic fields. As studies progress, more information will be forthcoming. Here are some studies that have shown the potential hazards of ELF fields:

  • In 1972, Soviet researchers linked electromagnetic fields with low grade health problems such as fatigue and headaches.
  • In 1977, Robert Becker, physician and biophysicist, Andrew Marino, testified before the New York State Public Service Commission about the results of their experiment that showed negative health effects due to exposure to ELF fields.
  • In 1990, David Savitz, an epidemiologist at the University of North Carolina, determined through a study that pregnant woman who used electric blankets have children who have a 30% increased risk of cancer as compared to children whose mothers didn’t use electric blankets.
  • The Chilipad Cube™ and ChiliBed Cube™ have no wires in or on top of the bed that can generate a magnetic field. The Chili Technology solution is low-voltage appliance without ELF that creates the warmth of the electric blanket and minimizes the hazards.
