In today’s world, an average evening routine might look something like this: get home from work, exercise, make dinner, and finally, plop down on the couch to enjoy a few hours of your favorite show or movie on streaming services like Netflix. Although it is important to shut down technology about an hour before going to sleep, watching your favorite movie or show in the evening has become a part of our culture. However, not everything you watch on Netflix can help you relax and unwind at night. Some shows are action-packed, adrenaline-pumping programs that leave you on the edge of your seat, dying to watch the next episode. These shows are not conducive to relaxing at the end of the day, or getting to bed at a reasonable hour. With that being said, if you decide to watch Netflix at the end of a long day, we’ve compiled a list of alternative programs that could help you relax before heading to bed.



Documentaries are a great way to wind down in the evening. They often allow you the opportunity to learn something new in an hour and a half to two hours. There are also docu-series such as Planet Earth, Human Planet, and Cosmos. These series provide episodes, generally under an hour a piece, that not only teach you new things, but also take you to a variety of locations on this world and beyond. Many find the scenic adventures in these series to be relaxing in the evening.


“Old” Movies

For the sake of categorizing the massive library on Netflix, “older” movies are movies that pre-date Generation Z. These movies could range anywhere from Roman Holiday and Charade, to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Grease. As what seemed to be a general rule in the movie industry in the past, these movies tend to have a simpler plot line with endings that are either happy or at least leave you satisfied with what happens to the characters, giving you peace of mind before bed.


Shows You’ve Already Seen

Many people opt for shows that they have already seen such as The Office, Parks & Recreation, Friends, old cartoons like Rugrats or The Wonder Years. If you’re wanting to quickly locate old cartoons, try browsing the “Kids” section of Netflix. By rewatching shows, you are still entertained, but your brain is not retaining any “new” information, you’re also not surprised if something “shocking” happens in the episode that you’re watching. This can keep your brain from becoming stimulated by new information or surprises, and helps you relax in the evening because you know what to expect. On the other hand, even if you haven’t watched the shows that are listed above, they are all less than 30 minutes long. So, if you have to watch “just one more episode before bed”, you’re only committing to an average of 23 minutes, rather than committing to other shows or movies that could last over an hour.


If You Don’t Have A Fireplace 

Sometimes there aren’t specific things you want to watch before bed, maybe you’d rather just listen instead. Many opt for Fireplace in Your Home, which are hour long segments of an active fireplace. This is perfect for those who live without a fireplace, but still want to curl up and read by the fireside at the end of a long day. Currently, there are five different fireplace segments that you can choose from.


Each month shows and movies are rotationally added and removed from the Netflix library. That being said, while some of the specific suggestions above may change, if you’re wanting to relax and unwind in the evening, opt for programs like those listed above rather than action-packed or suspenseful new shows and movies. Again, regardless of what you choose to watch on your streaming services, make sure you turn off all electronics approximately one hour before bed to help your mind and body prepare for a restful night’s sleep.
