5 Simple Tips to Beat the Summer Heat

5 Simple Tips to Beat the Summer Heat

A dip in the pool can be a great way to beat the heat on a summer’s day. But waking up in a pool of sweat can ruin a good night’s sleep. To make sure you’re as “cool as a cucumber” when you sleep I’ve got 5 simple tips for you to beat the summer heat.

1. Take Fans for a Spin. Call me old fashioned, but I’m still a big fan of an ordinary fan. Fans may be one of the oldest inventions human beings have used to keep cool, dating back to over 4,000 years ago in Ancient Egypt. The modern electric fan only goes back about 140 years, but it’s been a staple of cooling culture ever since. This is a low-cost option to circulate the air in your room and create a refreshing breeze while you catch some Zzzs.

2. Crank up the A/C. No one can deny that delicious feeling of walking out of the summer heat and into a nice, cold, air-conditioned room. Pumping up the A/C feels great at the beginning of the month, but it sure does carry a hefty price tag at the end of the month, which makes it an enjoyable but expensive option.

3. Chillax on a ChiliPad. The ChiliPad is a relative newcomer compared to the previous two staples of the cooling world, but it won’t be long before it’s a regular in the bedroom of anyone who takes their sleep temperature seriously. It’s also a more cost-effective form of temperature control than A/C-only methods, often saving customers up to 25% on their cooling costs.

4. Know Your Sheets. One tip for cool sleep is tucked right under your nose. The type of sheets you use—and the fabric they’re made of—really keeps you covered, ensuring you get the coolest sleep possible. The best sheets utilize optimal fabrics to either prevent or wick away sweat; breathable fabrics prevent sweat, whereas absorbent fabrics wick sweat away. Bamboo and cotton are best, but check out our more detailed analysis on the flip side to learn about the best sheet options.

5. Suit up. In just the same way your sheets make a difference in keeping your bed nice and cool, what you’re wearing matters, too. Be sure the clothing you wear to bed is engineered to maintain an optimal temperature and keep you dry. The best fabrics for your pajamas are going to be silk, cotton, bamboo, or some form of synthetic, moisture-wicking material.

Bonus Tip!

Suit Yourself in Your Birthday Suit. It’s your bedroom; do what you want to do. While sleeping au naturel might not be the wisest option during cold winter months, it could be just what the doctor ordered during warm summer months. The National Sleep Foundation encourages sleeping in the nude if it will help you achieve an ideal sleep temperature, which results in such health benefits as producing melatonin and growth hormone, improving metabolism, and sustaining longer, deeper sleep cycles.

Using any combination of these tips will ensure you beat the heat and get the coolest sleep possible. My nightly routine consists of turning the fan on, setting my ChiliPad to 65 degrees, throwing on my birthday suit, and jumping into nice, cool, bamboo sheets. I started this routine about 6 months ago, and this combination has led to the best sleep of my entire life. So, kick sultry, sleepless nights to the curb and use these tips to keep your cool, tonight!
