Snooze You Lose - How To Stay Awake Throughout The Day

QUOTE OF THE MONTH: “Several of my close friends in Silicon Valley sheepishly admitted that, of all the advice I’ve ever given in my books and podcasts, the ChiliPad had the biggest impact on their quality of life.” - Tim Ferriss, Tools of Titans

This time of year means two things. First, now that the holiday season has died down, we’re getting back to work and used to our daily routines. Second, we most likely have New Year’s resolutions. The combination of getting back into said routines, while also potentially combating a disrupted sleep cycle, can leave you feeling tired and less like yourself at work. The good news is, if you’re one of the 76% that feel tired at work there are solutions. Today, we’re going to cover ways you can beat the feeling of heavy eyelids and lack of concentration throughout the day. Some may even help with your New Year’s resolutions.

Stand Tall

If you’re one of the many people sitting for more than six hours a day at work, you should consider incorporating standing into your routine. Studies have shown that sitting for prolonged amounts of time for years increases your risk of obesity, diabetes, cancer and more. In addition, working at a standing desk can also help improve your mood, energy levels and productivity. If you’re new to using a standing desk, try using one for 20 minutes at a time while you work. As you feel more comfortable, increase your time throughout the day. There are a variety of tips to consider when using a standing desk, why wouldn’t you want to improve your mood and energy levels so that you were more alert at work?

Lace Up Your Sneakers

In today’s office culture, standing isn’t the only solution to re-energizing your mind and body. As we’ve covered, sitting for prolonged amounts of time can have serious health consequences. Another way to combat these daunting issues is to take walking breaks throughout your day. Research shows that taking a walk outside at lunch can help lessen your brain fatigue and frustration. Additionally, being in the sunlight can help boost your mood. If you can’t get outside, that’s ok - researchers have also found that any form of walking could increase creative thinking by about 60%. If you’re up and moving, this will not only help shed pounds, it can also help increase your mood and creativity, and eventually decrease your overall tiredness.

“Om”

While breathing is something we all do, many of us do not breathe correctly. Many also do not realize the negative effects improper breathing can have on our health and wellbeing. Research has shown that when breathing muscles fatigue, so do other muscles. There are a variety of breathing exercises that help you re-energize and refocus at your desk, like Nadi Shodhana or "Alternate Nostril Breathing" and abdominal breathing. If you need more help and guidance when it comes to proper breathing exercises, consider these breathing apps.

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration

If you think reaching for a drink with caffeine will instantly solve your groggy woes, think again. While caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea can help you wake up and provide a source of energy, they shouldn’t be the only things you consume when you’re feeling tired. There are a variety of amazing benefits that come with drinking 64 ounces of water or more throughout the day. Not only does it flush out toxins, improve skin complexion and promote weight loss, it can also help you re-energize and reduce fatigue! If it’s past 2pm and you’re feeling the post-lunch slump, reach for water or decaffeinated tea. Research shows that drinking caffeinated beverages after 2pm can drastically affect your sleeping habits, which in turn could make you more tired the next day, continuing a vicious cycle.

It’s Not Just What You Drink

You’ve heard it time and time again, “You are what you eat”. Whether you realize it or not, what you eat at lunch can either help or harm you for the rest of the day. When thinking about what to pack or order for lunch, consider lighter meals with plant-based proteins rather than options that are high in carbs, fat or sugar. Snacking properly throughout the day can also help subside hunger, and provide your mind and body with the fuel you need to stay awake and alert. Consider stashing your desk drawer full of snacks like almonds, fruit, wasabi peas and more to help you stay alert throughout the day.
