First, thank you for your support of the ChiliPad. Second, Happy National Women’s Health and Fitness Day! For those of you who do not know, I’m Tara Youngblood, co-founder of Chili Technology. It probably doesn’t surprise you that I’m a big advocate of NWHFD.
Today, I’m looking forward to celebrating with some Orangetheory Fitness in the morning and breaks for mindfulness with the Headspace App throughout the day. I’ll finish the day going to bed early on my ChiliPad so I can optimize my hours of sleep.
How do you plan to celebrate?
No matter what activity you turn to for exercise and recovery, it’s extremely important for your mental and physical health to take a time out and do something for yourself daily. Research shows that you are more productive during your working hours if you take breaks in between. When you’re stuck in a rut, take a ten-minute break to refresh and you will actually come back refocused. On a larger scale, commit to a yoga class before work with a friend, walk with a coworker during your lunch break or play basketball with your kids in your backyard.
One of the biggest questions we face today is how do I balance my health and my work? My formula for balance consists of these rules:
- Set yourself up for a successful night’s sleep*
- Structure your day with blocks of time for work with small breaks in between
- Tackle your least favorite activity first
- Leave your work at work
My daily activity of choice usually incorporates strength training, and my ChiliPad aids in muscle recovery while I sleep. After a morning of kettle bell squats at Orangetheory Fitness, there are muscles awake in my legs that I didn’t know existed! For relief, I like to set my ChiliPad to a higher setting for comforting heat, then switch to the cooler setting for cryotherapy. My overall preferred temperature being a cool 65 while I sleep.
National Women’s Health and Fitness Day is a perfect complement to our month-long support of Menopause Awareness. Menopause awareness movements across the country (like ours) are happening to educate women about their bodies and the hormonal changes we go through during menopause. These hormonal changes usually make us tire more easily, be more prone to injury or metabolize food at a slower rate. Whatever the change, we need to monitor and nurture it. The ChiliPad is a helpful tool to reduce hot flashes throughout the night so women can get the good night’s sleep they deserve.
Hormonal changes are not just during menopause, they also occur when women go through puberty, in our 20’s, and when we’re pregnant. These significant body changes are quite a lot for one woman to handle – but we do it by staying fit and maintaining awareness of our health throughout the years. The more stable we are in our health, the more stable we are in our lives. By keeping a healthy regime that we stick to, we can be present for work, our significant others, our family and ourselves each day.
*Successful night’s sleep: sleeping steadfast through the night and then naturally waking up in the morning without an alarm. My advice to make this happen? First, go to bed early. Eliminate technology, which signals to your brain that it’s daytime. Read a book to create a peaceful atmosphere. Finally, use a ChiliPad, which can be set to the ideal temperature for your body to maintain homeostasis while you sleep.
